Street parking in Golden's downtown core is metered and fills on weekends, and the US-6 approach from Lakewood is a single lane in each direction — a bus drops the group on Washington Avenue and waits nearby so nobody is navigating the canyon road after multiple tastings. It sits 12 miles east of central Lakewood — a manageable drive that becomes a real parking problem on spring school field trip days, when City Park's surface lots and the 23rd Avenue approaches back up with buses and parent vehicles simultaneously. The zoo's field-trip bus unload area on 23rd Avenue near the Tropical Discovery entrance is available April–May for school groups, with limited spaces that book weeks ahead.
